I Am a Representation of My Goals

I.          Introduction

This blog post is dedicated to my mentees! One of the first pieces of advice that I received in law school was that your professional reputation started yesterday. This shifted my mindset into realizing that from that point forward, I have to Represent myself in the way that I want people to remember me. Every interaction that I have and each time that I take initiative, reflects who I am as a person and the goals that I want to achieve.

II. Know Who You Are

The other day, I happened to re-read my law school personal statement and was shook. The same confidence and determination that others see in myself today, has been there all along. But the most beautiful thing about it is that even then, I was fully aware and executing on my strengths. In other words, I've been that girl! I have almost always had a strong sense of self, which is why I felt so deeply moved during my burnout period when I lost that. I know my strengths and I assert them with confidence and determination. My mentees do this too! Most of the mentorship relationships that I have were formed because they took initiative and relayed their positive personal qualities to me. Keep doing this, and the sky is the limit!

III. Identify Your Goals

Of course, the first step to achieving any goal is to identify it. Ask yourself, "what are some things that I want to ultimately accomplish in life?" Maybe you want to be a lawyer! Yet, there's some smaller goals to accomplishing that goal which are essential to your journey! You don't just become a lawyer once you receive your bar license. You have been becoming a lawyer from the time that you put your mind to it! Which is why knowing the smaller goals is key because they then influence your day to day life. For example, if I know that in order to become a lawyer, I have to graduate from college, then I am going to ensure that I am on track with obtaining the necessary academic credits. In order to receive the credits, I have to pass the class. Basically, map out what needs to be done and do it!

IV. Adjust Your Mindset

With that being said, becoming a lawyer is not a small feat to be underestimated! It's a huge goal! But it's a huge goal that you can achieve! You have to truly believe that. Any time that I have a goal that I am 100% dedicated to, I treat it like a seed that is planted within my spirit. At some point, it is bound to sprout! No, I cannot control all circumstances (i.e., who, what, when, where, and how) but I still do not leave room for doubt and that is why I believe I have been successful so far. My personal statement reads, "I am positive that I can conquer and complete law school" and "I am very prepared to live my dream come true." I was not just talking about getting into law school, I was talking about beyond it.

V. Conclusion

The bottom-line is that if you want to go to law school, you will! If you want to get good grades in law school, you will! If you want to pass the Bar Exam, you will! You can accomplish anything. Kamala Harris is our current Representation of that. I am truly ROOTING for my mentees' ultimate success but more than anything, I hope that THEY are rooting for themselves.
